—Asian stock markets mostly advanced Tuesday after President Trump unveiled his three-week extension to negotiate trade agreements, spurring mild hopes for deals following punishing U.S. tariffs. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index gained 0.3%, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 1%. China’s benchmark Shanghai Composite gained 0.7%.

What level of tariffs will the U.S. impose on imports and when? Stock futures were falling early Monday as markets were roiled by threats of new levies but also confusion over the deadline for the proposed duties.

Trump delayed the "reciprocal tariffs" in April, vowing to strike roughly 90 trade deals in 90 days. So far, the White House says it has reached trade agreements with only the United Kingdom and Vietnam, as well as a preliminary accord with China.

Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Kazakhstan will face 25% import duties starting Aug. 1, while goods from Laos and Myanmar will face a 40% tariff.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday reiterated that countries that don't make trade deals with the United States will get letters, informing them of the tariffs they will be charged if they export products to the United States.
