J.J. Spaun was dialed in on his approach shot on the second hole Sunday at Oakmont. Too dialed in. His wedge from 94 yards took one hop, hit the flagstick and ricocheted back, rolling off the green and 50 yards away.
The poor weather conditions at Oakmont Country Club got the better of most of the competitors at the 2025 U.S. Open during Sunday's final round, but J.J. Spaun overcame the challenge with a late surge to win his first career major.
Oakmont, Pa. – J.J. Spaun turned a sloppy mess of a U.S. Open at wet and nasty Oakmont into a thing of beauty at the end Sunday with two stunning shots that carried him to his first major championship.
"Our purse is $21.5 million. Winner's check is $4.3 million. We didn't raise our purse this year," USGA CEO Mike Whan said. "When I started at the USGA just four years ago, our purse was $12.5 million, so I feel comfortable that we've been a leader in moving fast and bigger. [...] We want the money to be commensurate with the achievement."

Spaun did one better by sinking his putt from the moon to hoist the trophy. He made history in the process. According to the broadcast, no player in any PGA event had ever shot a 40 or worse in the front-9 on Sunday at any tournament and still won the tourney.
J.J. Spaun is the son of John and Dollie Spaun. He grew up with his family in San Dimas in Los Angeles, County, California.
As he stood on the ninth tee box in the pouring rain, it looked for all the world like J.J. Spaun had just played his way out of contention for the 125th US Open championship.
